Low cost systems to ensure accurate applications.

All sections of the agricultural industry are suffering from low commodity prices, indeed most farmers will be struggling to cover costs.

From the cost of growing a ton of wheat/barley to the cost of producing a litre of milk, unless you are fortunate enough to have an aligned contract, the price you receive for your produce will barely cover the cost.
So what can we do? We can do very little about the price we receive for our product in this global market we now operate in.
One thing we do have control over is our costs. If we want to remain profitable in a challenging market, costs need to be as low as possible. I fully understand, we have all been tightening the belt over the past 10 years but every cost needs to be scrutinized more than ever before.
In the dairy industry, if we don't feed the cow properly, the milk output will soon tell us so! Feed is our most important cost which needs to be looked after. Low input/output or intensive high input/output systems should monitor cake/blend costs to ensure the 1ton/head or 3 ton/head requirement is bought at the most competitive price for the winter housed period.
Those on a grazing based system look forward to spring turnout. The intensive indoor housed 365days/year herds are exploring zero-grazing, whereby the grass is cut daily during the growing season, and brought fresh to the cow for integrating into the ration fed.
It is widely acknowledged that the cheapest feed of all, something we grow in abundance, is GRASS.
To exploit this feed to its full potential, regular fertiliser applications will ensure plentiful supply during the growing season. Fertiliser, as a cost , should be cheaper given the current $30/barrel crude oil price.
I doubt however we shall see prices of the 1990`s, £100-£130/ton anytime soon.
A simple GPS visual screen guidance system will give you the confidence that you have sowed the fertiliser to the best of your ability, with as little wastage as possible. You may also realize, that 32 acre silage field, when you measure the cut-able area, is only yielding from 29 acres..adjust fertiliser amount sowed accordingly.
For simple paddock sowing, the Tractor GPS system used at 12m working widths and above, is adequate for 95% of applications.
If larger acreages of spraying are undertaken, or for contract work etc, the Farmnavigator, pictured below, would be a better option for purchase.

Now available, Farmnavigator with the John Deere Starfire 300 external antenna for greater accuracy.
